A Local Band with A Juno and 20 Maple Blues Awards
Back To It’s Roots
June 14, 2017

To wrap up this 24th edition of Viree Blues Moosehead, a leading Canadian Blues Band.   This band of old-hands on the Ottawa region Blues scene was born on a day in 2008, after a collaboration on Viree Blues, followed by a few Sunday Jam sessions at our friends’ Irene’s Pub.   MonkeyJunk has since been awarded the Juno for “Blues Album of the Year” in 2012 and multiple other prizes among which some twenty Maple Blues Awards.

With Steve Marriner (vocals, harmonica, keyboard and barytone guitar), Tony D (guitar and vocals) and Matt Sobb (drums and vocals), MonkeyJunk features a present-day Blues, a mix of vigorous swamp blues with funky roots rock ‘n’ roll.   With five albums in their name: Tiger In Your Tank (2009), To Behold (2011), All Frequencies (2013), Moon Turn Red (2015), Time to Roll (2016), which keep pushing back the boundaries and blur the musical genre dividing lines but still keep to their roots, MonkeyJunk is now meaning “the rise of an all new Blues genre on the Canadian and International Blues scene”.

After his debut on stage, at age 10, one of the youngest old-hands on the Canadian Blues scene, renowned “ad mare usque ad mare” multi-instrumentalist and singer Steve Marriner, believe it or not, has been on the Viree Blues stage more than ten times, as solo as well as guest to many starring artists.   Although he worked solo or with Harry Manx, Sue Foley, David Gogo, Randy Bachman, Colin James, Big Sugar, JW Jones, Steve Dawson, Shrimp Daddy and Al Wood to name only those, the public actually did not discover Steve Marriner until 2007.   With his Steve Marriner Band, he launched a first album: “Going Up”, a Classic Blues Album but with a modern cursory.   This promising band faced a major upheaval in 2008, while rehearsing for a Viree Blues performance.   That show with their special guest, Tony D, sparked things off and prompted the birth of the now so famous MonkeyJunk Band.

Tony D, has been a guitarist, composer and performer for over 30 years and, as such, earned a high reputation.   He too reached the top with the Tony D Band and opened for or worked with, among others, Buddy Guy, Dutch Mason, Andy J. Forest and Bernard Allison.   With 9 albums in his name, he can also fit on the Canadian young old-hand Blues artists list.

Another frequent feature on the Viree Blues stage, before MonkeyJunk, Matt Sobb. drummer and percussionist who was in high demand.   During his last 25 years, he worked with lots of local, national and international artists either on stage, on tour or in studio sessions.   Just think of Kim Wilson (Fabulous Thunderbirds), Jeff Healey, Tom Wilson (Blackie & The Rodeo Kings), The Tony D Band as well as his brother’s Marty Sobb Band and The Mobb, among others.

At the dawn of it’s 10th anniversary, a band with stunning successes, leader on the Canadian Blues evolution, MonkeyJunk to brilliantly bring to an end the 24th edition of Viree Blues Moosehead, on Wednesday June 14 2017, around 8h00 p.m. at the famous bar Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage, in the Old Hull sector.   A so reviving great music break in the middle of the work week!   Tickets are already on sale at: www.vireeblues.ca and will be available at the door, always for only 20$.   You can also take advantage of our practical, profitable and so pleasant Dinner & Show Option at the #1 restaurant in the Outaouais according to TripAdvisor, Chez Fatima (www.chezfatima.ca), with it’s excellent and generous Moroccan cuisine, only one block away from Le Petit Chicago, a reservation which will also assign reserved places at the show, when you make reservations at (819)771-7568.   In the meantime, you can get some information on our featured guest artists by visiting: www.monkeyjunkband.com .   And you should visit our site where you’ll soon get a scoop: the name of the artist who will be launching the 25th edition of Viree Blues Moosehead, plus links to the sites of all our guests as well as lots of other interesting information at: www.vireeblues.ca .   For inquiries, please do reach us at: info@vireeblues.ca .   And make absolutely sure to get all the latest communications on that show by taking part in it’s facebook event at: www.facebook.com/events/1788466681473897/ and also make sure to join and like us on our facebook page at: www.facebook.com/vireeblues .
